An Aromatic Career Awaits You

Having a good sense of smell and a great memory for different fragrances are the basic must-haves of a perfumer, or a cosmetic scientist. But there are other specific qualities, skills and traits needed to be successful in this career. These will help any individual interested to become a perfumer perform the job with competence.

A perfumer’s job description can be tough and a little risky since chemicals and chemical testing are part of it. Here is a list of a perfumer’s duties and responsibilities. You might want to check them out before you say yes to this career.

These are some of the responsibilities of perfumers or cosmetic agents:

  • Perfumers conduct chemical testing in order to have a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the ingredients and materials used in the cosmetic products like shampoos, soaps, and perfumes.
  • Perfumers develop or improve the processes products undergo to ensure efficiency and conformity of the products to the environmental and quality control standards and regulation.

These are the job duties of perfumers:

  • They evaluate the odors of aromatic chemicals and other materials used.
  • They set standards for production and make sure workers and other staffs are adhering to those standards.
  • They determine and assess the quality of materials included in the process by visiting areas that compound and distill those materials.
  • They make adjustments to formulas and mixtures of samples that need improvement.
  • They reject those that do not meet criteria or do not pass the quality standards.
  • They approve those that are of good quality and meet the criteria.
  • They assess and evaluate fragrances for certain characteristics such as odor, strength, and harmony.

But before you become a perfumer, you must undergo specialized trainings and attend specialized perfumer courses and education. The best preparation for this career is to take a bachelor’s degree in cosmetic science. This will prepare and equip you with the scientific knowledge and skills necessary for your future career in perfumery.

A doctoral degree or master’s in cosmetic science is also very helpful in this career. This will further refine your skills, especially in the laboratory, and provide additional experience in conducting original research.
