Nursing is a profession that deals with patient healthcare. Nurses take care of patients, check on them to make sure they are comfortable and that they recover on time. But there is another side to nursing that people usually don’t know about. This is known as Advanced or Research Nursing. If you are looking forward to becoming a research nurse, read on to find out the various duties you will entrusted with. Nurses who go through additional studies to gain a graduate degree come to be known as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or APRN professionals. Some of the duties they have to perform include:

  • Comprehensively managing the treatment of patients from basic examinations to prescribing medication.
  • Educating about health and prevention from diseases.
  • To educate other nurses and to research and develop policies in order to improve the healthcare system.

Types of Advanced Practice Registered Nursing:

  • Clinical Nurse Specialists are those who study in a particular area of medicine like cardiac health or oncology etc. They use this knowledge to handle patient care directly and may also educate other nurses.
  • Certified Nurse Practitioners have the power to order x-rays and other lab reports and the decision of the course of treatment for patients suffering from chronic health conditions. They can also prescribe medicine and have and have administrative responsibilities as well.
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists are those whose duties include the administration of anesthetics as well as provision of pain management.
  • Certified Nurse Midwives deal healthcare that is more family-centered. Their main duties include dealing with childbirth and reproductive health. They also provide healthcare to women throughout their lives.

Course of Study:

In order to become a research nurse, you will need to apply for a degree in the course. It is preferred that you have a bachelor's degree in nursing before you apply, but it rests on which school you are applying to and the program you wish to pursue.

While the basic theoretic, ethical and philosophical coursework remains the same for all programs, individual programs have their studies specially designed to revolve around the basic duties that are to be performed.

  • A CNS professional's studies are designed according to the specific field of specialty. If they wish to specialize in mental care then their course would have more classes related to mental health issues.
  • CNP professionals work mostly in select groups of the population. For example a children nurse deals primarily with the health of children while there are nurses specifically to treat adults as well. Their studies, thus, revolve around their specific field of specialty or the population they want to cater to.
  • People looking to become CRNA professionals will have to undergo extensive studies about managing anesthesia and its administration, among other things. They will also have to submit a research project to be certified.
  • CNM professionals, other than the basic knowledge of gynecology and women's health care during pregnancy will also have to study about the risks involving pregnancy and childbirth as well as the fundamentals of child care.

Real World Practice:

After the completion of your studies you can find jobs basically anywhere that is related to healthcare. From private clinics and hospitals to educational centers, becoming a research nurse will lead you to various new doors where you can become part of the prestigious profession that is healthcare.
