Bringing Change with Trash Cans
It is not uncommon these days that people are getting more aware and mindful of properly disposing and throwing trash. The world, after all, is trying to go green as much as possible, yet the benefits of this attempt are often overlooked. The main objective of throwing trash properly is to make the world a better place to live in, and one company in particular has experienced the change that trash cans could bring.
Benefits of properly throwing trash
Etsy, an e-commerce site company headquartered in Brooklyn, has recently made the move to replace all the individual trash cans from each employee’s desks. The individual trash cans were replaced with common trash cans that segregated waste properly. As ideal as the situation is, it was not met with open arms. After all, who would prefer the inconvenience of having to stand and walk all the way to where the trash cans are as opposed to having an easy access to one in your vicinity?
However, as soon as the initial first stage of grumbling and complaining was over, the benefits of having common segregated trash cans soon dawned on everybody.
- Trash has been reduced and recycling became more effective.
To be more specific, because of the communal trash stations, Etsy was able to recycle more than 20% of what it used to recycle. Waste dropped by 18% and the compost rate shot up to 300%. Figures alone show just how effective the move was for the company. If they were just after a more efficient trash collection and disposal system, they have already achieved their goal.
- More interaction among employees and staff.
It is easy to imagine that there would be more social interaction among the employees with this implementation because they would have to get up from their chairs and walk all the way to the communal trash cans. The walk alone to the trash cans would require them to pass by others and throw in a greeting or two. Moreover, employees would also have more time to speak with others who are also throwing their trash away. Such interactions can help build up the team.
- A welcome break from work.
Sometimes, you would need time to step back and think about things to become more productive. However, for most part, a lot of people tend to forget this and just continue working like there is no tomorrow. A short break can do wonders for any employee since it allows your brain to recoup and think a little better.
The underlying reason for having segregated communal trash cans is to promote proper garbage disposal. Yet, the effects and benefits of doing so run more deeply than just trying to achieve proper waste management. It can also build up teamwork and foster camaraderie among staff and employees. Moreover, it can even give employees a much needed respite from work. So if your company has also started implementing communal trash cans, don’t be against it. You not only get to help save mother earth; you may just become more efficient in your work and build relationships with your co-workers as well.
