Can You Follow Her Career Choice??
At the age of 26, Serena Star-Leonard made a decision that surprised her family and friends. She quit her well paying job and started a business that would give her the freedom to follow her dream of travelling around the world. Moving from the comfort zone - well paying job- and sailing into unknown waters- following a dream-, is a career choice that many people wonder whether they should take or not.
Serena together with her husband John set out on a journey to travel the world and live her dream. But they did not only survive, but made a living out of their tours. They made money through blogging, inspiring documentary stories, writing books and a variety of online coaching. Today their achievements have seen them get partners and sponsors who pay them to pursue their dream and some provide them with the equipment they need on their ventures.
The decision to leave a well paying job and follow a dream is always a dilemma for many people. But before making such a decision, some question need to be answered to avoid regretting your choices later.
- Is your dream worth quitting your job?
One harsh reality is your dreams may not be worth quitting your job. Some of the passions are not financially viable warranting one leaving his/her job and fully depend on them. Some people ignore this reality and by pursuing their dream, they end up not only compromising their quality of life, but ruining the lives of those who depend on them.
In this regard, if you feel you have to follow your dreams for emotional fulfillment, consider doing so without having to quit your job. You can do the things you love during your vacation or during free time.
- Do you have a plan?
What next after you quit your job? Before quitting your job have a plan and make an informed decision. Do not chase your dream without a plan because by so doing, you will have planned for your failure. Like Serena, who started a business to help her follow her dream, you can do a similar thing if your passion does not have any financial benefits.
- Do you have enough savings?
Pursue your dreams at the right time when you have enough saved to cater for those depending on you as well as for the expenses you might incur when following your passion. Don’t follow your dreams at the expense of other people’s livelihood. Be responsible and consider how your decisions may affect those people around you.
When you have finally answered all the right questions and made the right plan, you can consider following your dreams now or in the future. What matters is you start planning and make informed decisions.
For Serena, she is living her dream and the lifestyle she had always wanted. It is not an easy thing to make the decision of following your dreams, but life is too short not to follow your dreams. No one should discourage you to follow them, but you should make informed decision and have a good plan. The big question is, can you follow her career choice? Or will you rather stay in the comfort zone!
