There are a number of short courses that provide basic skills in various areas of designing, which may be sufficient if you are looking to get an outline as to how to reap the benefits of graphics as an average user. But when it comes to choosing it as a profession there one needs to learn the deep and intricate skills that set each and every designer apart.

Selecting a good institution is one of the primary objectives when choosing to become a professional graphic designer. There are many universities and colleges that provide courses in this regard. Usually they offer degrees that have graphic design as only a segment of their program and not the core field in itself. For example, they may offer you Bachelors in Computers Science with a specialization in graphic designing, where the main focus will not be around graphics but around other aspects of Computer Science. What you need to look for is a degree program that has a core focus on graphic design. This will further help you specialize in a one of the many segments of designing; such as animation, website, multimedia design etc.

Another aspect to be aware of is whether the institution is licensed to teach modules on commercial design software. Designing jobs often look for people well familiar with the many designing software, e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, 3D Max, GIMP and so on. Selecting a course that includes specialization in such software skills is very essential. Otherwise you would end up enrolling in an additional course to specialize in these areas.

In effect, a graphic design course should familiarize you with the fundamentals of design technology as well as aiding you to select your field of expertise. A good institute will provide you with effective study material, qualified professionals with innovative teaching methods, as well as practical training in the field you wish to specialize in.
