Get Rich, Become a Chef

The job of a chef is highly demanding. When people are sitting and waiting for the most mouthwatering food, the chef cannot afford to make a single mistake. And of course, there is no rat chef of Ratatouille to make those heavenly dishes; the chef has to do the job on their own. However, there are certain pleasures that accompany the job and this is why you have so many men and women looking to become chefs. But can a chef get rich? They certainly can, provided they make the right career moves.

The median salary of an executive chef is $69,494 and with experience, the salary can easily go above a hundred thousand dollars. The problem is that one takes a lot of time to become an executive chef and even then, the median salary cannot really make them rich. Yes, an experienced executive chef can live off their salary quite comfortably, but that’s about it. They cannot really expect to become rich, even when they work in a top hotel.

So, how does a chef become rich?

It is worth submitting in this context that a chef cannot become rich overnight. There are no shortcuts in this profession. One has to put in time and effort to learn making those outrageous dishes that the food connoisseurs are so passionate about. A chef is not someone to prepare food; they are the Armanis and the Diors of the cookery world. They design dishes that are then prepared by the kitchen crew. And to be able to design dishes, a chef has to get experience and learn to use creativity and innovation. Only after a chef has mastered the art of designing food can they dream of becoming rich.

To get rich, a chef needs to become an entrepreneur. Take the examples of Rachael Ray or Jose Andres or Ingrid Hoffmann – all of them left their jobs and started their own restaurants. And thanks to their fame and connections, they attracted the best customers. And when someone earns their name in the food business, they indeed become big. And once a chef becomes big enough to be called a celebrity chef, there is no end to the money that they can earn.

Think of some of best known celebrity chefs – Anthony Bourdain, Gordon Ramsay, Charlie Trotter, Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck and Jamie Oliver. These are household names worldwide. How do they earn their riches? Via different ways – they have their celebrity restaurants, they host food shows that are watched by millions and even through endorsements. When someone like Andrew Zimmern goes around the world eating what others cannot even call food, quite a flutter is created. But yes, this is how these chefs earn truckloads of money.

Bottom line is simple – one cannot become a chef and think that they will get rich instantly. One has to learn their trade and cook up recipes that are different. And this is when they can become entrepreneurs and make the most of their already achieved celebrity status.
