This coming fall 2016 is a season students aspiring to become nurses will look forward to. It’s because the CBC will be offering a course that grants students a degree in nursing.
CBC or Columbia Basin College has just received its final approval from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges during the meeting held in Tacoma for their request to add another program. The nursing degree program will be CBC’s fourth degree program requiring four years of education and its second bachelor’s level nursing education in the region. The WSU Tri-Cities offered the first bachelor level nursing course.
According to the college’s president, Rich Cummins, they are aiming to assist area nurses to finally finish the last year of their education and training and therefore acquire a degree in nursing since having a bachelor’s degree in this profession is becoming a standard in the healthcare industry. Cummins also added that the goal of the health care industry is to add about 80% degree holders in the workforce by the next five years.
Kadlec Health System CEO and President Rant Wortman stated that CBC’s new program will be a great help for the whole region. According to Wortman, the number of nurses produced each year is not adequate to address the need of the industry.
Statistics showed that the average age of healthcare providers nationally, especially nurses are already old enough to be retiring soon. The Kadlec CEO added that the country’s population is becoming older and there is a growing number of adults that are already 60 years old and above. Wortman also stated that a lot of young nurses are really needed to care for these elderly.
The Columbia Basin College has already offered two nursing programs, first grants the student an associate degree and the other provides a certificate. CBC currently has 100 students enrolled in the nursing course. And these nursing courses have produced highly trained nurses that received good remarks and recognition from the health care industry. However, there is still a great need for nurses, especially with degrees.
With CBC’s new nursing program, there is a chance that more nurses finishing their final education will be produced which will add to the work force. The highly trained nurses graduating from the course will be hopefully enough to meet the need of the health care industry.
