I Aspire to be a Fashion Designer, What Course Should I Take?

I have dreams of fashion design as a career option. That said, what course or college degree do I need to pursue? What else do I need to do? If such questions are what is lingering in your mind, then this post is for you!

As a career path, fashion design is quite interesting as much as it is glamorous. Your love for fashion design alone is not enough to make you a successful clothes designer however. A great deal of creativity is paramount in this stylish industry. Being very meticulous in every detail is also crucial. The fashion design market of today is extremely competitive and therefore, you need to strive hard to be a cut above the rest. For those aspiring to get into the fashion design market, the following are some of the most crucial things to consider in your education plan:

Academic Requirements

As already mentioned above, breaking into the fashion design industry is not a walk in the park. A college degree is a good place to start. In addition to instilling in you a great deal of knowledge that you'll need to navigate through the murky waters of competition in this industry, it also helps you to become a better designer.

Having a college degree also enhances your standing among employers. Enrolling in a foundation course helps a fashion designer to improve their skills. Other courses that can help you gain a general footing in the art of design, textiles and clothing technology, as well as manufacturing are also available. Some people may prefer going up to postgraduate level before they can dive into the industry.

Key areas that a course in fashion design covers include:

  • Fashion
  • Knitwear
  • Art & Design
  • Textiles
  • Graphic Design
  • Fashion Marketing & Buying
  • Clothing Technology

Skills and Qualities Required

In addition to having a Fashion Design degree, you need to have:

  • Creativity and Artistic Sense: Being creative and artistic is a must. Converting raw materials into impeccable designs, beautiful costumes and unique accessories needs a lot of detailing and thinking outside the box.
  • An Eye for Detail: As a fashion designer, the detailing you add to the basic designs that you come up with is what makes your clothes, fabrics and accessories stand out. Having an eye for detailing is therefore a crucial part of your journey towards becoming a great fashion designer.
  • Good Grasp of Color, Texture & Fabric Quality Matters: Understand your raw materials well. Before starting on a new design, do an analysis of what design is likely to look best with what fabric, how to use it, and which colors do you need to mix with it. However minute they may look, such details will be the difference between a well-designed, stand-out costume and those that do not.
