One of the Coolest College Libraries in the World!
Spending time at the library when you are studying can be a fun experience - no, really! If you get to study here, that is.
The Delft University of Technology Library was built in 1997. When you see it you’ll probably think that it’s got a certain sci-fi edge to it. The library’s roof is covered with grass which creates natural insulation, making it eco-friendly. But the library has an interesting structure because it lifts from the ground on one side, making it easy for students and visitors to walk straight up to the top of the building. Pretty neat. There is a steel cone on top, which gives the library its unforgettable shape, and this doubles up as a skylight. One side of the library is made entirely from glass. Due to its sloping metal roof, there is space underneath the library for stacks of rare books and common volumes that are found on suspended bookcases. When you’re inside the library, you’ll find that large glass panels form a wall of light and have been carefully built so that they will allow constant air flow. This is another great eco-friendly feature that keeps the library at the perfect temperature. Most of the building is actually underground, so it makes use of the large cone skylight. There’s no doubt students will actually want to step into this library and spend lots of time there!
The library is not just a beautiful looking structure though. In it, you can expect to find a top collection of works in the technical scientific field. Bookworms will love that unique works from before 1800 are also housed, and carefully preserved under special climatic conditions. There are many study spaces and computer labs, along with online repositories that contain more than 52,000 e-books.
In 1998, the library won the Dutch National Steel Prize.
