Tips to Learn More Effectively as a College Student

Learning how to study can help college students manage their time and energy. It can also help them study effectively and get better grades.  When students do not use any techniques, they are often stressed and anxious, because they cannot determine exactly how much time they need to review their notes and prepare their assignments. They are not even sure if they can complete the assignments in due time. Having a strategy for studying and reviewing can minimize the stress and make the students work more effectively.

The following are some tips to study more effectively:

· Take notes: this skill requires much attention on your part. You should pay attention to all what the instructor says or writes on the board. Your notes should be clear and meaningful because they are going to help you to understand the material.  If you have problem with taking notes and you feel that the instructor is moving very fast; try to ask the instructor for clarification and to highlight for you the important ideas. Reviewing your notes is also important because it enables you to figure out points of confusion. Then you can prepare the questions you need to ask your instructor in order to get a deeper understanding of the material.

· Manage your time: the number of hours you may devote each day for studying may not be all the time sufficient. That is why you have to set your priorities. This means you should start with the most important tasks or maybe with the ones that might be difficult or that requires more time to be completed. But if you start to feel tired, you should take a break and eat healthy snacks to regain your energy.

· Prepare for your courses: going through the material and preparing some notes ahead of time will help you anticipate the points that the instructor is going to discuss. Nothing makes a class more enjoyable then walking in with a good understanding of the material before the instructor even opens their mouth to speak.

· Participate in class: when you participate, you show that you are interested in the course and that you feel motivated to learn. You can, for instance, participate in class discussions, ask questions, contribute new ideas…etc. Participation can generate more energy and make learning more enjoyable.
